Robotics
Robotics is a field of science and
engineering that can offer practical, exciting and rewarding career
options. This site is dedicated to those who would like to learn more
about robotics and related educational, career and mentoring options.
Links are provided for definitions, institutes, organizations,
educational kits and information related to a 'FIRST' foundation which
offered this author most rewarding experiences mentoring younger
generations of students in robotics and organizational disciplines. |

The FIRST Robotics Competition is an
exciting, multinational competition that teams professionals and young
people to solve an engineering design problem in an intense and
competitive way. The program is a life-changing, career-molding
experience - and a lot of fun. The FIRST competition has reached more
than 70,000 students on over 6900 teams. Teams come from Canada,
Brazil, Great Britain, and almost every U.S. state. The competitions
are high-tech spectator sporting events, the result of lots of focused
brainstorming, real-world teamwork, dedicated mentoring, project
timelines, and deadlines.

Volunteering for
FIRST
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
 |
Our experience with FIRST
consisted of volunteering project management, design and mentoring
skills for a team called "MAK" (Marshall High School
And
Eastman Kodak Company). MAK was one of many corporate
sponsored high school teams in the upstate NY region. Teams
design and build a robot in conformance with game and competition
specifications provided each year by FIRST and then compete with
hundreds of other teams in national competitions.

Jay Leno's Chin-Killa |
BattleBots was a popular show aired on Comedy Central TV. BattleBots
is a great web site depicting remote controlled robots that battle
each other to the death in an arena.
BattleBots must survive cutting, plummeting, stabbing, pounding, flipping, etc. from their opponents. They also have to avoid additional arena obstacles such as ramming spikes & kill saws that intermittently surface from the floor and huge sledge hammers that pummel any robots that are pushed or driven into the corners of the arena. |
